Crappie are being taken on traditional crappie baits … jigs and minnows. On the deeper impoundments the fish have been found suspended in 30 feet of water, about 14-16 feet from the surface. You can catch a few off bigger brush piles, but the bite is slow.
On smaller lakes, crappie have been caught tossing a jig across a lay-down in12-16 feet of water. Let it drift back across it. If you can get your jig to just clip the top of the lay down you will get more bites. The lay-downs that have been drawing much of the action are not much more than two-feet high.
Salt and Pepper seems to be the best color, with a darker color on the top of the jig. Anglers in the know are recommending the Crappie Magnet.
Crappie sizes are getting bigger with several reported catches of fish over two pounds.
