Review of 'The Retreat' at Possum Kingdom Lake

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Possum Kingdom Retreat, and let me tell you, it's a waterfront paradise that exceeded all my expectations! If you're looking for a quintessential lake experience, this is the place to be.

Near The Water Experience

The location is nothing short of amazing—it's situated right on the north side of the boy scout peninsula nestled perfectly between FM 2951 and Johnson’s Peak, offering easy access to Possum Kingdom Lake. The proximity to the water and stunning views makes it a dream destination for anyone looking to immerse themselves in aquatic activities. As someone who loves boating, fishing, and jet skiing, I was thrilled to find a public boat ramp just across the street. This made launching our boat hassle-free and allowed us to maximize our time on the water.

Possum Kingdom Lake offers some of the best lake fishing in Texas.  If you do not have your own boat you can hire one of the many fishing guides on the lake.  Check here to find some of the best on PossumKingdomTexas.com Fishing Guides.

The View at The Swimming Pool at The Retreat Possum Kingdom Lake - Perfect

When you’ve had your fill of swimming or boating in the lake for the day, then dock your boat and head over to the huge crystal-clear water of their community pool.  The pool is surrounded with plenty of seating and one of the best views of Possum Kingdom Lake. It’s a great place for kids, eating dinner, and it even has in-pool seating with an umbrella which makes a great place for adult relaxation. Corn hole, picnic tables, covered space with ceiling fans, and lake views make this pool a perfect place to gather. The most unique feature: a boat parked IN the pool.

Hiking Trials with Wild Life

The back of The Retreat community has direct access to one of the best hikes around Possum Kingdom Lake: Johnson’s Peak.  I didn’t walk up the trail on this visit but I did find some baby deer who stopped and said hi.   A year ago I hiked to the top of Johnson’s Peak and wrote about it here on TexasOutside.com.  This is a beautiful trail has a variety of rock formations, vegetation, elevation, wildlife, and breathtaking views.

Boating and Rentals

What's even more convenient is the availability of boat and personal watercraft rentals right across from The Retreat Possum Kingdom Lake at Tommy’s Boat Rentals. Tommy’s offers wakeboard boats and pontoon boats for rent.  So no matter your boating skill they have the boat for you.

An underrated feature of the location is the gas dock, which allows you to refuel without having to go far. This is a real time-saver, letting you spend more time enjoying the lake and less time worrying about logistics.

Boat Parking & Storage Next Door

The availability of boat trailer parking is another plus. Knowing that we had a safe and convenient place to park our trailer added an extra layer of comfort to our trip. For those who require additional storage options, it's worth noting that dry and wet slip storage is available through sister properties right next door.

The Best Part - Luxury Cabins

After a day full of water activities, it’s a delight to return to your amenity-packed luxury cabin. It truly felt like a home away from home. The cabins are well-appointed, cozy, and offer everything you need for a comfortable stay: cold AC, full kitchen, grills, and porches with a view. This community has the perfect combination of community and privacy.  We could walk easily from cabin to cabin and find friends at the pool, but  with cabins nestled in the hillside and among the trees, each cabin also had a feel of nature and seclusion.

Many of The Retreat at PK cabins are still available for sale.  They are well designed and offer turnkey rental services through their site here.  There are a variety of cabins ranging in square footage and from 2-3 bedrooms. The layout and design variations could allow sleep for 10 or more!  Come out and enjoy a day, week or buy one and stay the whole summer and visit all year!

All in all, The Retreat at Possum Kingdom Lake provides an unparalleled experience for water enthusiasts like myself. From the prime location to the convenience of boat ramps, rentals, and excellent amenities, it’s the perfect getaway for anyone looking to make the most of their time at Possum Kingdom Lake. Highly recommended!

Fishing Report from TPWD (Dec. 25)

GOOD. Water stained; 57 degrees; 0.05 feet below pool. Striped bass are fair in 20-40 feet of water with live bait. Your best bet is to just put baits in the water and slowly move around with the trolling motor until you find them. Keep in mind that we are approaching deadstick season. Sand bass are fair in 20-30 feet of water with live shad or small slabs and jigs. Live shad seems to produce a few more fish than artificial. White and silver are good colors, but white seems to be preferred. Catfish are still fair to good near Rock Creek Camp. Cut shad is producing good numbers of fish in 5-20 feet of water fished on or near the bottom. Water clarity is steady at 1-8 feet of visibility and slightly stained. Report by TJ Ranft, Ranft Guide Service. Bass are moving up with the lake level rising. Target points and drop-offs with Carolina rigs, chatterbaits, and jigs. Report by JK Outdoors Bass Fishing Guide.
